What drives the cost of custom woodwork
Hours and lumber set most of the price. Size, species, joinery and finish move both. Bids from real makers looking at your brief give you the number.

What moves the price
- Size — A bigger piece needs more lumber, longer glue-ups and more surface to sand and finish. A dining table is a different job from a side table in the same style.
- Species — Pine and poplar cost the least per board foot. Oak and maple sit in the middle, cherry above them, and walnut is usually the priciest of the common domestic hardwoods. Wide, clear or figured boards cost more again.
- Joinery and design — Mortise and tenon, dovetails, breadboard ends and curved parts take more hours than screws and pocket holes. A design the maker has built before is quicker than one drawn from scratch.
- Finish — A hand-rubbed oil finish is quick to apply. Several coats of varnish or polyurethane with sanding between coats take longer. Epoxy river pours add material cost, curing time and flattening work.
- Quantity — Setup, jigs and milling are shared across a set, so the second and third matching piece usually costs less than the first.
- Delivery — Large pieces need a van, blankets and two people, or crating for freight. Some furniture is built to come apart for delivery; ask how.
- Deadline — A tight date is a rush job. Rush work usually costs more, and some makers will pass.
How to brief a woodworker (paste this into your post)
- What the piece is and what it's for (a dining table for six, a desk for two monitors, shelves for vinyl records).
- Finished dimensions: length, width and height, plus the space it has to fit, doorways and stairs included.
- Species if you have a preference, or 'open to suggestions' plus a budget.
- Finish: natural oil, clear varnish or polyurethane, painted, or epoxy.
- Photos of the room, a sketch or reference images of pieces you like.
- How it will be used: kids, pets, heavy books, outdoors, food contact.
- The date you need it, and your delivery address or 'I'll pick it up'.
- Budget range. Makers bid better against a real number.
